How to educate without an instruction manual

Location: Primary Class

Workshop leader: Roser Batlle

‘Any unnecessary’ help is an obstacle to development. It is an act of arrogance to take the initiative, to think that we can save another person when it is they who must act for themselves.”

Maria Montessori

  • What is the ‘between the lines’ message our children receive when we excessively help them with tasks they are already capable of doing on their own?

  • What is the relationship between academic overprotection (concern about studies and the future) and the insecurity that children develop in adulthood?

  • Why is it essential to allow children to make mistakes and experience their consequences, rather than parents taking care of them?

  • Why should helping with household chores not be seen as ‘helping,’ but as part of children's responsibilities?

  • Why is it important for parents to share their own stories, mistakes, and low moments with their children?

Are we educating for academic success or for life? Too often, unintentionally, our overprotection and desire to spare our children from suffering end up clipping their wings, making them insecure and dependent. We invite you to a session to rediscover the value of autonomy, responsibility, and effort as pillars of their emotional development and future well-being.

Key topics to be covered in the workshop

  • Avoiding excessive help: Excessive concern for academic success generates insecurity and dependence.

  • Allowing mistakes: Clipping children's wings prevents them from learning to fend for themselves and to cope with the frustrations of adult life.

  • Consequence: Excessive help conveys the message: ‘Maybe you can't do it on your own.’

  • Daily tasks: Children should participate in household chores as members of the family team, not just as ‘helpers.’

  • Key development: This participation encourages autonomy, effort, responsibility and increases their self-esteem (they feel useful).

  • Role modelling: Parents should be role models for cooperation.

  • Ideal timing: It is essential to introduce habits of responsibility when children are young, rather than waiting until adolescence.

  • The role of parents: To be guides who support their children and set goals.

  • Emotional education: It is necessary to share with children that parents also make mistakes and have difficulties; living without suffering is impossible.

  • Keys to success: Patience, perseverance, effort, and positive reinforcement are essential for introducing change.
